A Sight for Sore Eyes

Did you know that the phrase “you are a sight for sore eyes” or “it’s so great to hear your voice” has actual physiological roots?

Let’s explore…..

The vagus nerve is one of your cranial nerves. It is the nerve that brings your nervous system from a state of “fight or flight” to one of “rest and digest”. There is a branch of this nerve in your face and throat. This branch is stimulated by hearing someone’s voice, seeing someone you love, laughing with friends, singing etc. This is partially why human connection is so important. It helps to regulate our nervous system. This can decrease inflammation, which is important for management of chronic disease, reduce anxiety and depression, and help with pain! Go make a date with your bestie!

I hope that in this month of love and heart health, you have been able to connect with people who are a “sight for sore eyes”. Who you spend time with matters. Make sure they are someone who makes you feel nourished, not depleted!

As for me, I got to spend the last few days with my nieces-which includes an 85 pound chocolate lab (who decided to rip out my brothers plants……). I can attest to the fact that spending time with loved ones makes you feel calm! I am in the process of buying a co-op. If you know NYC real estate then you know how I’ve been feeling. The last few days have been necessary for my well being. Nothing better than shopping, watching rom-coms, lunch dates, and snuggles with my ladies!

I am off to San Diego on 2/22 for the American Physical Therapy Association’s Combined Section Meeting. It will be a few days of learning, catching up with friends, and networking. That wraps up a huge month of continuing education and outreach! It also means some new information coming you way. Stay tuned!

Thank you for your continued support! I would not be here without you. If I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out.
